Artwork Details

Artist: Laura Bernardeschi Nelson
Medium: Oil pastels on paper
Size: 45 x 35 cm (framed)
Finish: Varnished and signed

Description

Light, Interrupted examines the moment when stillness is disrupted but not yet transformed. A concentrated burst of light cuts through a subdued landscape, creating a strong central axis while leaving the surrounding space intentionally unresolved.

Working in oil pastels, the artist builds the surface through layered gestures that shift between control and release. The contrast between the luminous center and the darker, more grounded forms produces a subtle tension—suggesting movement without fully resolving into it.

The palette of muted greys, dusty pinks, and earthy tones slows the visual rhythm, encouraging sustained observation rather than immediate impact. The landscape itself remains ambiguous, functioning less as a physical place and more as a perceptual field shaped by light.

Varnished for depth and preservation and signed by the artist.

Light , Scattered , artwork in oil pastel

Artwork Details

Artist: Laura Bernardeschi Nelson
Medium: Oil pastels on paper
Size: 45 x 35 cm (framed)
Finish: Varnished and signed

Description

Light, Scattered explores the fragmentation of light within a dense, immersive landscape. The central tree anchors the composition, while the surrounding space dissolves into layered marks and shifting tones, creating a sense of depth that is more atmospheric than literal.

The surface is built through gestural applications of oil pastel, allowing moments of control to coexist with looser, more instinctive passages. Light does not appear as a single source but as dispersed fragments – subtle points and streaks that move across the composition and activate the darker forms.

The palette, dominated by deep reds, muted greys, and earthy tones, creates a charged environment where warmth and shadow coexist. Rather than describing a specific place, the work operates as a perceptual field shaped by light, density, and movement.

Varnished for protection and depth, and signed by the artist.

Purple Falls: A Dreamlike Landscape

“Purple Falls” is an atmospheric landscape created in oil pastels, where a luminous waterfall descends through a dark, immersive terrain.

The composition centres on the vertical movement of water, contrasted by shadowed surrounding forms that suggest both natural structures and emotional depth. The violet-toned sky introduces a dreamlike quality, while subtle light accents create a sense of quiet energy within the scene.

Rather than representing a specific place, the work evokes an internal landscape—one of release, transition, and stillness. The waterfall appears soft and almost veiled, dissolving into mist as it reaches the base, reinforcing a sense of transformation.

The use of oil pastels allows for rich layering and blending, creating both texture and softness. The surface holds traces of movement and pressure, reflecting the balance between control and fluidity.
