Edge of the Tide
Description
Edge of the Tide is an atmospheric oil pastel landscape by Laura Bernardeschi Nelson, capturing a wide coastal view at the meeting point of water, sky, and land.
A sweeping expanse of blue dominates the composition, textured with layered strokes that suggest movement and reflection. To the left, warm golden light stretches across the horizon, contrasting beautifully with the cooler tones of sea and cliff. Birds in flight animate the open sky, adding scale and freedom to the scene.
Dark structural elements in the foreground — a suggestion of fencing or shoreline barriers — frame the composition subtly, grounding the vastness of the landscape and enhancing depth. The result is a balanced dialogue between openness and containment.
The oil pastel medium lends the surface a velvety richness, with visible gestural marks that enhance the natural energy of the water and sky.
Concept
This work explores transition and threshold — the edge between land and sea, warmth and coolness, stillness and movement. The composition invites the viewer to look outward while remaining anchored in the foreground space.
The colour harmony of deep blues, soft greens, and golden light makes the piece both calming and quietly powerful.
