Reconnect with Nature: A Northumberland Treehouse Retreat

Last weekend, I found myself seeking something many of us often overlook—peace. I spent two nights and three days in a magical North Sea treehouse in the heart of Northumberland, surrounded only by trees and the quiet rhythm of nature. It was a journey to reconnect with the earth and rediscover a simpler, slower way of living. No Wi-Fi. No TV. No distractions. Just pure stillness.

A Journey to Disconnect

From the moment I arrived in Northumberland, the change was palpable. The landscape, with its wide open spaces and rolling hills, was a refreshing escape from the fast pace of modern life. The drive was serene, and by the time I reached the treehouse, I felt like I had stepped into a world from thirty years ago with no social media. The air was fresh, and the only sounds were the rustling of leaves and the distant calls of birds.

The treehouse itself was simple but perfect with her heart shape —just enough to make you feel at home while keeping you completely immersed in nature.

I spent my evenings in front of a crackling fire, the logs burning brightly in the hearth, as I sat in complete silence. There was no television, no radio, and no social media notifications. It was just me, my husband, and the flickering flames. The peace was almost overwhelming in its beauty. It felt like a return to a time when the world moved at a gentler pace.

Dining in the Absence of Technology

One of the most remarkable aspects of this getaway was how the absence of technology made everything feel richer. Without distractions, we focused entirely on each other and the food. Our dinners, simple and delicious, tasted even better than usual. Each bite felt more meaningful, enhanced by the pure experience of savouring flavours without the usual noise of the world around us. We ate in the warmth of the firelight, feeling more connected—not only to each other, but to the moment itself.

Exploring Northumberland’s Rich History

The following day, we ventured out to explore more of Northumberland, starting with Bamburgh, home to the awe-inspiring Bamburgh Castle. The castle, with its imposing stone walls and panoramic views of the coastline, offered a glimpse into the history of this rugged region. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving our heritage and understanding the past. Standing before the castle, I felt a deep respect for the resilience of the people who lived here centuries ago.

A Visit to Howick and the Earl Grey Arboretum

On our final day, we visited Howick Hall, the family home of Earl Grey, near Alnwick. The historic estate was stunning, and I was especially captivated by the beautiful arboretum on the grounds. Walking through the lush gardens, full of snowdrops surrounded by centuries-old trees and vibrant flowers, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe. The sun shone warmly, even as a cold breeze from Scandinavia swept through, adding a refreshing touch to the otherwise perfect day.

A Warm and Memorable Escape

Throughout my weekend in Northumberland, the combination of history, nature, and quiet reflection created an experience that was deeply enriching. The warm sun, the cool breeze, and the sense of timelessness gave me a newfound appreciation for the simpler things in life. My time in the treehouse, disconnected from technology and immersed in nature, allowed me to recharge and reflect on the importance of slowing down and truly being present.

If you ever find yourself needing a break from the noise of modern life, I can’t recommend a retreat like this enough. Whether it’s basking in the warmth of a fire, exploring a historic castle, or wandering through a peaceful arboretum, Northumberland offers a rich and restorative experience that you won’t soon forget.
