This surreal oil pastel painting was inspired by a dream—an alien world soaked in red and orange light, where strange plants didn’t just grow… they watched. In Sentinels of the Marsh Planet, Laura Bernardeschi Nelson captures a dreamscape filled with sentient vegetation and organic surveillance. The creatures have eyes for flowers, roots for limbs, and light that pours from their centers like beams of thought or warning.

The red marsh-like landscape, paired with deep purples and earthy tones, evokes a planet both ancient and unearthly. It’s a place that feels alive in every corner, where nothing is truly still. You can almost sense the heat, the hum of the air, and the eerie calm of a world without humans.

One cloud above stares back—a purple, hovering mass with an unblinking eye—while a triangular form directs vision toward the mountains. Who is watching whom? And why?

This piece, part of Laura’s dream-inspired surrealist work, continues her exploration of memory, intuition, and inner landscapes. It’s unsettling, poetic, and entirely her own.
