Between Night and Water

Description

Between Night and Water is an oil pastel work on paper that explores a liminal landscape suspended between darkness, reflection, and quiet illumination. The composition is framed by a deep, shadowed border that encloses a central scene of water and palm trees beneath a softly glowing night sky. Small points of light punctuate the atmosphere, suggesting stars, distant reflections, or fragments of drifting light.

The viewer’s gaze is drawn inward, as if looking through an opening or threshold into another space. The river or body of water reflects muted blues and greens, creating a sense of gentle movement and continuity. The palm trees form a rhythmic line across the horizon, their forms simplified yet expressive, anchoring the scene within a dreamlike environment rather than a specific location.

Oil pastels are used for their immediacy and texture, allowing layered colour and visible gestures to shape the surface. The contrast between the dark enclosing edges and the luminous interior heightens the sense of intimacy and stillness, reinforcing themes of shelter, observation, and quiet transition.

Rather than narrating a place, the work functions as an emotional and psychological landscape. It reflects an ongoing exploration of environments as spaces of pause and reflection, where nature, light, and time exist in a fragile balance.
