Salt, Skin, and Survival
Description
Salt, Skin, and Survival is a mixed media artwork that examines climate change through the physical and symbolic resilience of the female body. Created using acrylic paint, beach sand mixed with gesso and glue, seaweed, and found objects collected along the coast of Northumberland, the work brings together natural materials and human form to express endurance in the face of environmental instability.
The female figure emerges from a textured, weathered surface, her body seemingly shaped by wind, salt, and erosion. Seaweed forms her hair, directly connecting her presence to the marine landscape and reinforcing the inseparability of woman and environment. The embedded coastal objects carry the marks of time and tide, referencing both natural cycles and the increasing pressures placed on fragile ecosystems.
The layered construction conveys a dual sense of vulnerability and strength. Rough textures and organic materials speak to exposure and fragility, while the figure’s grounded presence suggests persistence, adaptation, and quiet resistance. The woman is not portrayed as a passive witness to climate change, but as a living archive of its effects—resilient, scarred, and enduring.
This work frames climate change as a deeply embodied experience and positions women as symbols of survival, continuity, and care in a transforming world. Salt, Skin, and Survival invites reflection on humanity’s relationship with nature and the enduring capacity of women to withstand, adapt, and remain.
