“Awaiting Return”
By Laura Bernardeschi Nelson
“Awaiting Return” is more than a painting — it is a personal and emotional reflection on distance, love, and longing. This piece was born from a moment of quiet contemplation, inspired deeply by Frederick, whose presence, even from afar, continues to stir a sense of hope, memory, and emotional connection within me.
The scene captures a solitary figure standing on a quiet shoreline, gazing across the sea toward a distant boat. The figure, robed in shades of red and violet, seems caught between the present and the past — rooted in the sand, yet emotionally adrift in the direction of the departing vessel.
I created this work using oil pastels on paper (40 x 30 cm), a medium that allowed me to blend soft textures with vibrant emotion. The swirling sky, the shimmering sea, and the wind-blown grasses were all guided by the feeling of waiting — of loving someone not here, and perhaps not near, but always present in the heart.
The painting is signed, varnished, and professionally framed, ready to live on the wall of someone who understands the beauty of longing — someone who, perhaps, is also awaiting a return.
As an artist, I often find that the most silent moments carry the loudest emotions. “Awaiting Return” was painted during one of those silences. It is a tribute to patience, to emotional depth, and to the invisible threads that connect souls across distance and time.
Thank you for sharing this journey with me.

“Beneath the Mist” — Breathing Life into Silence
By Laura Bernardeschi Nelson
There are moments when a landscape doesn’t just exist — it whispers. “Beneath the Mist” was born from one of those quiet moments of inner stillness, when vision and memory merge into something dreamlike and untamed.
This work was created with oil pastels on paper, a medium I love for its softness, immediacy, and the almost magical way it responds to the pressure of the hand. Oil pastels allow me to paint not only with color, but with emotion. I blend them with fingertips, with cloth, sometimes even with the edge of my palm — sculpting the landscape through touch, layer by layer, like breathing warmth into a cold world.
In “Beneath the Mist”, mountains emerge from the veil — not in full clarity, but wrapped in mystery, as if they carry the secrets of another time. I softened the peaks intentionally, blending greys into pale sky blues and smoky whites, allowing the mist to become part of the structure itself. The scene is not meant to be precise, but felt — as if you’re standing there, holding your breath.
The water, with its ethereal turquoise tones, offers a hidden sanctuary — a contrast to the rawness of the earth tones that surround it. I worked with layers of color and smudging to create a glowing, liquid surface that feels alive. The earth itself carries warm ochres, soft siennas, and gentle violets — a palette drawn from both desert and dream.
This painting is signed, varnished, and framed, but more importantly, it is infused — with quiet energy, longing, and reverence for the unseen.
It is a place imagined, yet familiar. A landscape that does not demand to be understood — only witnessed.
Thank you for stepping into the mist with me.
