In Playing with Van Gogh, Laura Bernardeschi Nelson reimagines Vincent van Gogh’s iconic “Trees in the Landscape” with a contemporary twist, using pencil on paper rather than oil paint to bring the scene to life. Inspired by van Gogh’s expressive portrayal of nature, Laura infuses the composition with her own personal narrative, blending the past with the future.

The scene is populated by a unique cast of characters: a little car—reminiscent of a Thai tuk-tuk—pulls a woman seated in a carriage, a curious fusion of modern and vintage elements. Instead of van Gogh’s original farmers, two young figures, a man and a woman with striking red hair (likely a self-portrait of the artist), are dressed in hippie-inspired attire, symbolizing a sense of freedom and connection to the earth.

The backdrop features a tall building, replacing the humble house seen in Van Gogh’s version, and in a surreal twist, an unidentified flying object (UFO) hovers in the sky, suggesting that what we’re witnessing might not belong to our time at all. With this imaginative blend of figures and symbols, Laura creates a playful yet thought-provoking narrative, offering a glimpse into a future where the boundaries between nature, humanity, and the unknown may blur.

A celebration of van Gogh’s legacy, Playing with Van Gogh speaks to the timelessness of his themes while introducing new, whimsical elements that invite the viewer to question how the past, present, and future might intertwine in unexpected ways.
