Last year, I rescued Panna, a sweet four-year-old pussycat, from a cat charity. I had owned other cats in the past, but with Panna, something different happened. Our bond is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced—a deep connection that fills my heart every day. It’s almost as if she talks to me—not with words, but with the tone of her voice, which changes depending on her emotions.
I’ve heard people say that cats don’t really care about their owners, but Panna proves otherwise. When I look at how she behaves around my husband and me, there’s a clear difference in how she interacts with each of us. When Panna wants affection or attention, she seeks me out. But when she’s hungry, she knows exactly who to approach—my husband, who’s the one usually cooking our evening meals. Her actions tell me that she understands us, and in her own way, she shows us that she’s paying attention to our needs and rhythms.
But what really makes Panna special is the love she gives me. After years of feeling lonely in a foreign country, where landlords often don’t allow pets, I thought I would never experience the kind of freedom and comfort that having an animal companion could bring. And then came Panna. She is not just a cat to me—she is my sister, my friend, my confidante.
There’s something incredibly soothing about having her around. She’s funny and playful, always ready to bring joy into our home. But what means the most to me is how she helps with my anxiety and post-traumatic stress. At night, when my thoughts start racing and I find myself awake with worry, Panna seems to know exactly how I feel. She’ll come and sit next to me, curling up with her little paws resting on my head, as if saying, “I’m here with you. You’re not alone. Don’t worry, I’ve got you.” Her presence is more comforting than any words could ever be.
Having Panna has truly been a gift. She’s taught me the power of companionship and the healing nature of unconditional love. It’s easy to forget how much a pet can change your life until you experience it firsthand. If you’ve ever thought about adopting an animal, I urge you to do it. Not only will you bring joy and comfort into your own life, but you’ll also be giving a loving home to an animal who desperately needs it. Every time I look at Panna, I’m reminded of how lucky we both are to have found each other.
So, if you’re considering adopting a cat or any pet, I can’t recommend it enough. It will not only make you happier and healthier, but it’s also a way of making the world a better place by rescuing animals who have been abandoned or neglected. In giving them love, you receive so much more in return.
