Title: Dead or Alive ?
This moving, mixed-media work by Laura Bernardeschi explores the terrible situation of immigrants attempting to improve their lot in life by combining acrylics, wallpaper, and a wooden nough and crosses (tic tac toe) game, all of which are adhered to a stretched canvas.

In this artwork, the artist powerfully addresses the tragic realities faced by many individuals who risk everything in search of safety and opportunity, often losing their lives in the perilous journey across cold waters.

The “crosses” in the artwork represent the loss of life because they are positioned around life-saving vests, which are protective devices that, regrettably, cannot stop death in the extreme conditions.

The two red lines stand in for the borders that migrants try to cross in a last-ditch effort to live and improve their future. These borders are portrayed as barriers that both physically and symbolically separate people from safety and freedom.

Dead or Alive carries immense significance, offering a visual commentary on the dangerous realities many face when fleeing their homelands. Laura Bernardeschi, known for incorporating meaningful messages in her work, uses this piece to draw attention to an urgent and global humanitarian crisis. The artwork not only speaks to the specific experiences of immigrants but also resonates with broader themes of survival, migration, and the human cost of borders.
