After four years of up and down on my novel, I arrived at the point of finding a publisher. I was not sure because due to the words of my tutor during a creative writing course, I realised it might be very difficult to find a publisher, so I decided to forget for a while my project.
Too many stories connected to unhappy writers spending time and a fortune to find someone who likes their lovely work.
Moreover, I was too busy changing my life in the northeast of England, and I was quite busy with my new awful job at that time. My mind thought only about solving problems for unhappy and badly treated employees working for Northumbria University.
But when I finally changed my job and started to work as a librarian, I considered again the idea of publishing my book and maybe adding it one day to that huge collection.
After accurate research, I realised that Amazon might be the fastest and cheapest way. Here is the process.
Firstly, you must open a profile on KDP, which means Kindle Direct Publishing. If you have already a profile with them, it is very easy because you can use the same password and e-mail address used to buy on Amazon.
Secondly, they give you for free an ISBN. It is OK that it must be used only in that platform, but if you have just started you have not to pay £91 to Nielsen for only one ISBN. Remember, if you do not use Amazon but the traditional book market you can save money buying ten ISBNs with the official Nielsen UK for about £170
Thirdly, you must enter all the details requested like your home address, your bank account if paid, and your tax number.
If you live outside the USA, it is even easier for the tax department.
Once approved, you can start to upload your manuscript.
I used a file uploaded and edited on Google Drive. I also downloaded a couple of free extensions of chrome called Grammarly and LanguageTool to check my grammar mistakes. Remember, you can be a very good writer, but it is very easy to make mistakes when you type furiously your book, so it is better to use these free tools.
At the end of my editing, I saved the manuscript in Word and PDF because if you upload in Kindle format, they ask for a Word format. If you upload for a paperback or a hardcover, it is better in a PDF format.
For the cover and editing
You can create a cover using their pictures, or you can upload your cover. They will check your mistakes during the process and usually email you asking to modify your manuscript if the mistake is too evident.
Moreover, they will email you again asking, this time for your copyright, if you are the author of the book.
In my case, I was the author, illustrator and translator, so I did not have any issues, otherwise, you need to show them the agreement between you and the other people behind your book.
At the moment, I have published four books on the platform in less than 2 weeks and I have not paid a single penny!

I did some research and I noticed that similar websites ask less, but then you need to buy an official ISBN before or pay for some tokens or an editor for your cover.
Times for publishing
The book will be published in around 72 hours and will be ready on the platform in less than one week. They also offer a copy for the author with a discount price that is very useful to check your job and make some changes.
Once the books are on the platform, you can share your links with social media. And if you have some penny in your pocket you can choose on the same platform to pay for a promotion for the release of your book.
Even better, your book will be available in all the countries that have a contract with Amazon and you do not need to update again your manuscript after the first time.
You have the choice of the platform to use.
For example, I picked up Amazon.it for my book in Italian and Amazon.co.uk for my books in English because I live in the UK.
Only if you decide to publish the book in a different language, you have to start from the beginning.
Amazon will give you the choice for the price, but it is better if you follow their advice for it and the type of public because the royals can change a lot.
In the end, Amazon for me is the best for self-publishing authors and like a river full of ideas, I have finally the possibility to share my words with the rest of the world
